Polish features without a pack - (anti) book review
The author of the essays collected in the publication entitled "Polish features without a pack" is a Russian teacher of the Polish language, thanks to whom we Poles have a rare opportunity to look at our language through the eyes of a foreigner, and a foreigner who speaks correctly. Polish is better than many languages. Meeting with the story of our performance was certainly an interesting experience, although it did not fully meet my expectations from reading. This is a collection of short essays devoted mainly to the perception of the Polish language by non-Poles.
The author asks a lot of questions that we would never even ask ourselves in life (for example, why is the expression abundantly written with a closed "-", because it resembles the word: dirt spelled "u") or why so many idioms associated with the word "dog" have a pejorative connotation. Unfortunately, anyone who expects to find answers to these and similar questions here will be disappointed. Moreover, many of these considerations may seem unreasonable to the Polish reader, for example:
According to the peasant mind, a malicious adjective should characterize something that should come true anyway. Because how can a word based on a root burn mean something useless and ineffective? Or maybe the logic of the guardian, not the peasant, is at work here?
I do not think that the association of Poles with the word "uselessness" in the first impulse was directed at the peasant word "yield", therefore, the described contradiction, in my opinion, is very far-fetched.
The structure of the content seems well thought out, and the historical threads, both related to world history and the evolution of language, are arranged chronologically. The first chapter is a rather loose interpretation of the story of Adam and Eve, unfortunately, seasoned with too sharp shades, which caused me personal disgust. The same tendency towards vulgar eroticization of content is intertwined throughout the book, sometimes taking away the pleasure of reading from people who are not necessarily looking for similar content in books of this type.
As someone whose native language is not Polish, she may have to deal with the issues presented, so her essays are likely to find greater acceptance among foreigners studying Polish. Perhaps they will also be a good entertainment for cabaret viewers who like more or less sophisticated word games. Although I would not recommend this book to my friends, I would like to read another book, for example, completely devoted to unknown stories of famous characters.
But interesting historical stories about the international marital and extramarital relations of several families of magnates and artists deserve a positive assessment.
